Norway’s fire technical competence centre, founded in 1934 as Norges branntekniske laboratorium (NBL) and now a Norwegian company owned by RISE of Sweden and SINTEF. It combines fire research with testing and documentation of materials, constructions and safety equipment to international standards, is accredited by Norsk akkreditering, and is designated as a notified body — with a seat in the European Commission’s Fire Sector Group for notified bodies, which is where the interpretation of the harmonised fire standards actually gets settled. Its laboratory is at Tiller, south of Trondheim.
